Student Advisory Board 18-19

Benjamin Schuster

Benjamin is a sophomore from Cleveland Heights, OH majoring in Economics and Public Policy. He is passionate about closing achievement gaps in education, voter registration and turnout issues, and LGBTQIA+ rights. Ben is involved in the Central Student Government, optiMize Social Innovation, and the Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP). He sees the Student Advisory Board as an opportunity to gain a new perspective on becoming involved in the U-M community and learn about how to make an impact through working with others who are passionate about social justice and community involvement. In his free time, he enjoys reading, eating, and talking about business and politics.

 

Lauren Schandevel

Lauren is a senior from Warren, MI. She is passionate about economic and racial justice and is involved in the Michigan Affordability and Advocacy Coalition. This past summer, she worked with Abdul El-Sayed’s gubernatorial campaign. She is majoring in Public Policy. Lauren enjoys drinking coffee and watching movies with friends in her free time. She is excited to contribute to Ginsberg Center’s work through serving on the Student Advisory Board.

 

Kathleen Hurley

Kathleen looks forward to collaborating with other students and spreading awareness about community engagement through her position on the Student Advisory Board. She is already very involved in service through Project Outreach and Circle K. She is a first year graduate student from Grosse Ile, Michigan studying Higher Education. She is passionate about equitable education and is a member of the Graduate Organization of Students in Higher Education (GOSHE). Kathleen loves traveling, photography, and watching movies.

 

Kathryn (Katie) May

Katie is a sophomore from Dearborn, Michigan majoring in Chemical Engineering. Having found a passion for volunteering though high school involvement, Katie is eager to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields. She does this through her membership on the BLUElab Executive Board and the Society of Women Engineers. She is looking forward to learning more about the diverse community of Ann Arbor through her time on the board. In her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time outdoors.
 

Nolan Bick

Nolan is Senior from Rochester Hills, Michigan majoring in Biology. Nolan believes in sustainable living and environmental justice and would like to gain new skills and experiences through working with a diverse group of people on the board. He likes music, the outdoors, and sports. He is involved in the Michigan Active Citizens- Alternative Spring Break (MAC-ASB) and is a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

 

Alyssa Schmidt

Alyssa is a Senior from Northville, Michigan majoring in Economics. She is a member of Circle K and Join Us Club and is involved with the Michigan Abilities Center at Heritage Hill Haven. She is passionate about advocating for the rights and welfare of children and adults with special needs, as well as immigrants and refugees. As a member of the Student Advisory Board, Alyssa aims to collaborate between organizations to foster a greater sense of community and encourage University of Michigan students to become involved in the surrounding community. Some of Alyssa’s favorite activities include baking, playing sports, and going on adventures.

 

Andrew Wong

Andrew is a Junior involved with BLUElab and M-fly. He believes strongly in equity for all. On the Student Advisory Board, Andrew is excited to learn about many of the issues within University of Michigan’s campus and voice his opinions to enhance the community in unique ways. He enjoys surfing, basketball, and hiking. Andrew is from Midland, Michigan and is majoring in Aerospace Engineering.

 

Breann Edwards

Breann is a Senior from Fenwick, Michigan majoring in Biology. She is a member of the site development team for Michigan Active Citizens Alternative Spring Break (MAC-ASB). She is also a student manager at the Student Organization Resource Center and a research assistant in the Department of Pediatrics. Breann is passionate about issues surrounding access to healthcare. She is excited to learn about social justice issues and empower others to make change. Breanne is looking forward to creating networks with people who are also interested in social justice. She likes to read, watch movies, and explore Ann Arbor with her friends.
 

Adam Greer

Adam is a Senior from Grand Haven, Michigan majoring in Chemical Engineering. He is involved with BLUElab, American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and New Life Church. Adam enjoys being active through playing soccer, backpacking, camping, and snowboarding. He is passionate about immigration issues and protecting our environment. Adam would like to gain a better understanding of student leadership through this position. He envisions the Student Advisory Board as a place where members can create initiatives to impact members of the community while learning from each other and building strong foundations for social justice.

 

Dana Berkowitz

Dana is a Junior from New Jersey majoring in Psychology. She is involved in the University of Michigan Pre-Speech and Hearing Club and the Aphasia Program at the University Center for Language and Literature. She is passionate about language acquisition and literacy and institutional equity. Dana is excited to use her strengths to further the mission of the Ginsberg Center and have the opportunity to work with a diverse team that shares similar goals. In her free time, Dana enjoys the performing arts, gardening, and kayaking on the Huron River. She is also involved with Fight Hunger through Hillel programs and Greek Life philanthropy.

 

Caroline Kelly

Caroline is a Senior from Menlo Park, CA majoring in Public Policy. She is involved with Wolverine Support Network and WeRead. She is passionate about Early Childhood Education. She believes it is important to eliminate disparities within education starting in Primary School. Caroline would like to learn what specific practices can be taught to student organizations across campus to develop better partnerships with the Ann Arbor community. She enjoys playing tennis and listening to music in her free time.

 

Mina Juma

Mina is a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and is excited to serve on the Student Advisory Board to make a positive impact by increasing awareness of social justice issues on campus in order to make it a better place for students. She is a Senior from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan majoring in Neuroscience. She is involved the Martha Cook Board and the Residence Hall Association. Mina is passionate about immigrant and refugee rights. Mina enjoys being a part of M-Pals, reading, swimming, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family.
 

Amani Echols

Amani is an alum of the Michigan Community Scholars Program and co-founder of the program WolveReaders. She is a Senior from Farmington Hills, Michigan. Because of her desire eliminate health inequities among women from marginalized backgrounds, Amani is involved in the Pre-Public Health Association (PPHA) and majoring in Community and Global Public Health with a minor in Gender and Health. She is looking forward to continuing to spread awareness on campus of the Ginsberg Center and what it offers through her position on the board. Amani would like to gain professional and program evaluation skills. She has previously served as a member of the Student Advisory Group on Engagement (SAGE). Her favorite activities include traveling, writing poems, and painting.

 

Maya Makhlouf

Maya is a Senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan who enjoys sports, exploring new places, and trying new foods.  She is a Mechanical Engineering major and is involved with the Society of Women Engineers and the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Team. She is passionate about supporting historically underrepresented people in the STEM fields and educating people about their implicit biases. Maya would like to focus on the organizations who want to get involved in the community and learn how the Ginsberg Center can help them to impact their community during her time on the board.
