The Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning

ginsberg center service cords

Our goal:

To recognize students at graduation that have -- through voluntary service, activism and advocacy, or other forms of civic engagement -- helped address or make positive change around a specific social issue in partnership with economically or socially marginalized communities beyond campus.

How to Apply:

►For Undergraduate students: We've now simplified the process by making it possible to purchase your service cord at the same time you purchase your cap and gown! Individual students must nominate themselves and can receive service cords through a two step process:

  1. Fill out our short certification form for undergraduate students. The certification period is on a rolling basis from February through May (for May commencement) or October through December (for December commencement).
  2. After submitting your certification, you will receive a confirmation email to indicate you can purchase a service cord at one of the Michiganensian Graduation Extravaganza events for $10. MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR CONFIRMATION EMAIL WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO PURCHASE YOUR CORD.

Students who are unable to pay for a service cord and students involved in a Ginsberg Center program should contact us after submitting a service cord application to pick up a service cord at no cost:  ginsberg.service.cords@umich.edu

Proceeds from the sale of service cords goes toward funding student scholarships and grants.

►For Undergraduate Departments & Program Staff

►Graduate Schools & Departments

►Student Organization Leaders

►Community Organizations

You an either (1) advise students to apply individually for service cords (using the instructions above or below) or (2) order service cords in bulk using our online form for $5 per cord. The Ginsberg Center does not handle distribution to individual students for bulk requests -- you will be responsible for picking up your bulk order at the Ginsberg Center and distributing cords to individual students.

►For Graduate students:

  1. First, check with your School, Department, and any student organizations in which you are involved to make sure that you are not already receiving a service cord as part of a bulk submission.
  2. If your School is not submitting bulk nominations, you are still eligible to receive a service cord by filling out our short certification form for graduate students. The certification period is on a rolling basis from February through May (for May commencement) or October through December (for December commencement).
  3. After submitting your certification, you will receive a confirmation email with further instructions on how and when to purchase your service cord at the Ginsberg Center. Service Cords can be purchased with a personal check made out to "University of Michigan" for $8. YOU MUST BRING YOUR CONFIRMATION WITH YOU TO THE GINSBERG CENTER TO PURCHASE YOUR CORD.

Students who are unable to pay for a service cords and students involved in a Ginsberg Center program should contact us after submitting a service cord application to pick up a service cord at no cost:  ginsberg.service.cords@umich.edu

Proceeds from the sale of service cords goes toward funding student scholarships and grants.
