Teach for Democracy: Facilitating Constructive Dialogue in an Age of Polarization (Part of the Promoting Democracy Teaching Series in collaboration with CRLT)

- For Faculty: Join us for an interactive workshop with Dr. Nicholas Longo, who works closely with students building civic skills and confidence as the inaugural director of the Rutgers Democracy Lab. Participants will develop skills such as learning to listen, ask questions, invite stories, and find common ground.
Reaching the People: Visual Storytelling for Access and Action (This event is co-sponsored by the Stamps School of Art and Design)

- Open to All: Join us for a special, hands-on Democracy Week event with designer and author Ariel Aberg-Riger, exploring how visual storytelling can make information more accessible and actionable for broad public audiences.

- Open to All: Join a wide variety of campus and community partners for a resource and engagement fair to reflect on our role in building local democracy, to learn about local voting and civic engagement resources, and to participate in a variety of activities designed to strengthen their civic muscles and create community.

Making the Most of ‘Hot Moments’: Election Edition (Part of Promoting Democracy Teaching Series in collaboration with CRLT)
- October 7th, 10:00 AM - 12 PM @ Ginsberg
- Open to UM faculty, graduate students/GSIs, and post-docs. In this interactive workshop, participants will reflect on their own experiences of 'hot moments' (a sudden eruption of tension, conflict, or big emotion during class, often connected to a heightened awareness of the social differences in the room), consider a range of pedagogical choices, and practice language for responding to hot moments in the classroom.

Each BLOCK X BLOCK event features a Detroit community-based leader, organization, organizer, advocate, artist, or practitioner in conversation with a U-M scholar, teacher, staff partner, student leader, or community-engaged researcher around a key issue affecting Detroit.
