Washtenaw Rock Stars has been making powerful strides to remove financial barriers to music education across Washtenaw County. Established in 2022, the student organization is dedicated to providing free musical instruction focused on exposure, exploration, and sustained accessibility for local youth.

“We volunteer at different community sites across Washtenaw County, teaching kids instruments like piano, guitar, and drums,” said Savanah, co-president of Washtenaw Rock Stars. “Our goal is to make music accessible and sustainable to eliminate the financial barriers that often prevent kids from learning.”

Alongside her co-president, Mallory, the team partners with Community Action Network (CAN), a local non-profit that works to educate children and youth, assist families in meeting their basic needs, and create and maintain supportive neighborhoods. Washtenaw Rockstars teaches weekly at Green Baxter Court, Brick Community Center, and Hikone. Lessons are held after school and reach children from elementary through middle school. “We offer a variety of instruments so kids can explore what speaks to them,” Mallory shared. “It’s so rewarding to see their faces light up when they learn a new song.”

Washtenaw Rock Stars places access to music education at the heart of its work. “Private music lessons are expensive, and school programs are often underfunded,” Savannah said. “We want everyone to have access to music, regardless of their financial situation.”

The group's approach relies on collaboration and feedback. “We meet regularly with staff from CAN and adopt lessons based on what works best for the kids,” Mallory explained. “It’s all about communication and listening.”

As part of the Ginsberg Center’s commitment to advancing equitable community engagement, we have provided funding to the group for their work. Support from the Ginsberg Center has helped the organization ensure consistent transportation, allowed for diversification of instruments, and expanded outreach. “Ginsberg has given us the tools to make our work sustainable, and sustainability is key to everything we do,” Savannah said. Mallory agreed, “As a relatively new organization, Ginsberg’s Partnership keeps our program equitable. Having a variety of instruments allows kids to discover what they really love, and that’s only possible because of this support.”

Beyond the music itself, Washtenaw Rock Stars helps University of Michigan students develop skills in teaching, collaboration, and community-based leadership. “Many of our members are interested in education or music, but others are in STEM or social sciences,” Savannah said. Mallory added, “We all get to connect our passions, whether that’s science, art, or music, to something that gives back. It’s an incredible experience.”
