Literacy Volunteer Initiatives

The Ginsberg Center's literacy programming adds capacity and value to educational settings through individual sessions and weekly programs. In collaboration with schools, community centers and other partners, the Ginsberg Center offers multiple opportunities for the University of Michigan community to support literacy development, with an intentional focus on academically vulnerable students. Our volunteer initiatives are offered as weekly and one-time opportunities:

  • Our weekly literacy opportunities provide volunteers the chance to build relationships with young people, develop skills, engage with communities and receive ongoing support from the literacy team.  These experiences are designed for students looking to make a semester-long commitment and participate in ongoing training and support offered by the Ginsberg Center.
  • Through one-time literacy experiences, we offer students an introductory opportunity to connect around reading in the community. These programs can provide Michigan students the chance to share the joy of reading with young people and families.  In addition to their service experience, volunteers also build skills through a brief orientation and post-experience reflection.
