The Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning

Students with car

Transportation access is often a barrier for students and student organizations interested in community engagement activities. Here, we offer a list of options available for travel to and from your service site, including public transportation and the use of Ginsberg Center vehicles.

For Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti-based service sites:

  • The Ride (Free bus for UM students, faculty, and staff with an MCard)
  • ArborBike (Bike share program with Hourly, Daily, and Annual rates)
  • Students or Programs with a Ginsberg Center contract may register to drive a vehicle to and from their service site (details below), based on availability.

For Detroit-based service sites:

  • Detroit Connector: free bus service to and from Detroit sponsored by the UM Detroit Center
  • Students or Programs with a Ginsberg Center contract may register to drive a vehicle to and from their service site (details below), based on availability.

Who Can Drive a Ginsberg Vehicle?

Students in Programs or Student Organizations that have a contract with the Ginsberg Center are eligible to register to drive Ginsberg vehicles for activities related to their service. Students in the Ginsberg Center's America Reads program are automatically eligible to register to drive: If you are a member of a student organization that engages in community service, you may be able to arrange for a contract by contacting transpoinfo@umich.edu.

We will make every effort to fulfill requests, however, we may not be able to fill all needs during high use periods.

General Rules on Vehicle Use:

  • Thoroughly review the Transportation Folder that is given to you at the beginning of your vehicle reservation.
  • Ginsberg vehicles are not for personal use.
  • Refuel vehicle to at least half-tank before returning. Fuel must be paid by your organization.
  • Return your vehicle to the proper Parking Structure and return the keys to the Ginsberg Center front desk when your reservation is done.
  • If the Ginsberg Center is closed by the time you get back, you should return the keys to our overnight lock box (Further instructions in the Transportation Folder)
