The Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning

Readers & Best: Spring Break Alternative

For those who will be on campus during Spring Break (Saturday, February 24 through Sunday, March 4), we will be offering Readers & Best: Spring Break Alternative. Participants will read The Skin You Live In and The Name Jar to promote inclusion and diversity and facilitate a classroom activity to K-5 classrooms in Washtenaw County. These books were selected in partnership with Craig McCalla, elementary principal Dexter Community Schools, and Dr. Nell Duke and Julia Lindsey from U-M School of Education.

Participants can sign-up for one or more half-day blocks. The Ginsberg Center will provide preparation and training, travel, support for classroom engagement, and post-engagement reflection.

To see day/time options for Spring Break opportunities, and to indicate your interest, please complete this form by February 8th at 11:59 PM.

Part of a group that would like to read together?  E-mail Sara at ssaylor@umich.edu to set up a group opportunity.

More about Readers & Best

Readers & Best, a partnership between Student Life’s Ginsberg Center and the Athletic Department, provides the opportunity for the UM campus to come together and share the joy of reading with local elementary-aged children while promoting literacy.

Additional Readers & Best Opportunities

Guest readers are needed for Wednesday and Friday afternoons throughout the Winter semester to read with elementary students in Ypsilanti Community Schools.  Books support themes upon which the classrooms or school are focusing, or are timely based on heritage celebrations or current events.  The time commitment is inclusive of training, travel and reading. Sign-up here.
