Ginsberg Co-Hosts The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commision Tomorrow, Sept. 1

The Ginsberg Center is proud to serve as a co-host The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, alongside CLOSUP in the Ford School, for its first stop on its fall campus tour. The meeting will take place tomorrow, Sept. 1 in the Rogel Ballroom in the Union on from 1-4 pm and again from 5-8 pm. Students are invited to attend.

The Commission’s meeting will kick off the Ginsberg Center’s fall democratic engagement programming. Our focus on nonpartisan education around the democratic process complements the Commission’s aim to establish fair representation across the state by analyzing 2020 Census data, assessing the needs of communities of interest, and ultimately drawing new State House and Senate districts along with Congressional districts.

Ginsberg’s democratic engagement team will use the redistricting process as an educational tool throughout the fall 2021 semester as we move towards the 2022 midterm elections, in which the redistricting process will play a key role. Voter participation is essential to civic engagement and strengthening democracy, as evidenced by the passage of Proposal 2 in 2018 which led to the establishment of the Redistricting Commission, a year that saw historic turnout across Michigan.

The Redistricting Commission’s thirteen members will discuss new State Senate districts in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, the Voting Rights Act and other related topics. This event serves as an opportunity for the campus community to see the Commission’s work first-hand and to engage with the Commissioners whose work will directly impact our representation for years to come.

The Ginsberg Center team welcomes the members of the Commission and recognizes the critical role they play in shaping our democracy.  We encourage all who are able to attend and participate in the Commission’s first on-campus meeting in Michigan!
