Transportation

Ginsberg Center programs may request the use of university vehicles by following the steps below. We will make every effort to fulfill requests, however, we may not be able to fill all needs during high use periods.

1. Register as an Approved Driver (once-a-year process)

Before you are eligible to request a U-M vehicle, University Parking and Transportation Services must validate you as a responsible driver. As a member of your program, you will receive specific instructions about how to register with Parking and Transportation Services. You must follow those instructions exactly in order to be recognized as a Ginsberg-affiliated student and entered into our reservation system. If you believe you are eligible to drive and have not received instructions, please contact transpoinfo@umich.edu.

You must complete the driver registration process once per academic year. If you are not approved, you must identify another student to serve as a driver, and that person must register.

To gain approval from University Transportation Services, you must have a valid U.S. driver's license, a limited number of points on your driving record and a history including a limited number of accidents.

The approval process generally takes 3-5 days, though if you have an out of state licence it may take a bit longer. It is your responsibility to register in advance -- we cannot give you  a vehicle before you are approved.

2. Request a Vehicle Through Our Online System

Once you have been approved, you can log into to the transportation system to request a vehicle for your work with a Ginsberg-based program (America Reads, Project Community, SERVE, Interfaith Action, Semester in Detroit). Make your request as far in advance as possible, and at least 48 hours before your project date.

3. Refuel the Car Before Returning It

If your gas tank is less than half full, take your vehicle to Fleet Services (map) and refuel before returning it.

4. Return the keys to the Ginsberg Center front desk

If the Ginsberg Center is closed by the time you get back, you should return the keys at 8am the next morning.
