Grants, Scholarships, Fellowships & Internships

The Ginsberg Center provides funding for students engaging in service-learning and civic engagement projects and programs.  Internship positions for master's level students are also available.

Grants

Student Initiative Grants

The Ginsberg Center invites proposals from SOAR-recognized student organizations for initiatives that will advance the Ginsberg Center's mission to engage students, faculty, and community members in learning together through community service and civic participation in a diverse democratic society.

Alternative Breaks Grants

Undergraduate and graduate student organizations registered with SOAR and recognized by the University are eligible to apply for funds. Previous Ginsberg Center awardees may apply, but priority may be given to groups who have not received Ginsberg funding in the last 3 years.
Student groups may apply for funding up to $500. Funds may be used for project costs such as housing, materials and supplies, vehicle leasing, pre-trip education and training, and community partner support.

Davis Projects for Peace

Funded by the Davis Foundation, Projects for Peace are summer-long projects designed and implemented by undergraduate students passionate about peace in their communities and around the globe. The initiative hopes to prepare students as ethical global leaders by providing the resources to execute innovative grassroots project ideas. These projects, as defined by students, creatively address worldwide peace efforts providing sustainable solutions to contemporary society.  This is a competetive process; one proposal will be selected from the University of Michigan, and advanced to the Davis Foundation.

Scholarships

Rosalie Ginsberg Scholarship for Community Service and Social Action
Up to two $3,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to support University of Michigan students holding junior or senior standing this fall who demonstrate a commitment to community service or social action and who demonstrate financial need.  Preference is given to students from Cuyahoga County, Ohio; thereafter to students from Ohio; and thereafter to any student.  Inger and William Ginsberg established the Rosalie Ginsberg Community Service Scholarship Fund in honor of William’s mother.

Scholarship candidates must demonstrate strong community service or social action involvement, as well as financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

Scholarships awardees will have attained junior or senior standing by the Fall semester of the scholarship year (2012) and will be enrolled full time in an undergraduate program on the Ann Arbor campus during the current academic year.  They must also have a current FAFSA on file with the office of Financial Aid, and qualify for financial aid.

Fellowships

Wallenberg Fellowship

In the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg’s experience at Michigan, the Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Fellowship will allow selected students to take part in a community service project or civic participation anywhere in the world. The fellowship will support such experiences as, for instance, volunteer work with a humanitarian organization such as a school, clinic or aid program, or the exploration of humanitarian issues not well understood in the US.

A total of three fellowships will be given this year to cover transportation, room and board, and local excursions made in connection with the project:

  • Two undergraduate awards of $1,500
  • One Bagramian Award ($2,500) for a graduate student pursuing a project related to the field of public health

The application deadline is February 22, 2013.

Further information as well as the application can be found in M-Compass.

This fellowship is now administered by the International Center.  For more information, contact wallenberginfo@umich.edu.
