AW: Be a Site Leader
Be a Site Leader
Site Leader Responsibilities:
Site leaders are a critical component of the AW program. Therefore, we are looking to create an AW site leader team consisting of committed and thoughtful individuals who will be both active leaders of their site group as well as active members of the site leader team. Successful Site Leaders optimally have previous experience with AW or other SERVE programs as participants; however, experience is NOT required. Site leader responsibilities are to:
- Attend a mandatory site leader retreat at the beginning of the semester (Sept. 20-21)
- Attend biweekly site leader education and training sessions throughout the year
- Consult with site contacts (calls, letters, e-mail) to plan activities and confirm logistics
- Communicate trip developments and needs to the Lead Team (housing, transportation, etc.)
- Assist in participant recruitment/public relations by flyering, attending mass meetings, etc.
- Lead 3-4 AW’s per semester (average of about one per month)
- Facilitate discussions and reflections within site group
- Assist in planning educational meetings for the site group and all AW participants
- Conduct interviews for participant selection
- Coordinate fundraising events for site donation
- Spend an average of 2-4 hours a week in this position, not including the trip
Alternative Weekends are overnight commitments that require a Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday stay. Each group will go to the same site throughout the semester in order to foster continuous community service.
Drug & Alcohol Policy:
Alcohol and drug use and possession on any UM-AW trip is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN due to University policy, liability and legal issues, respect for the members of your group, and most importantly the individuals and organizations with whom we are working during weekend trips. If you are found with alcohol or drugs, you will immediately be asked to leave your group and end involvement with AW.
