AW: Be a Participant
PARTICIPANT COMMITMENT
Your group will meet throughout the fall and winter semesters to orient and educate yourselves about the issues you will or have encounter on your site. As an AW participant, you have an obligation to the community you will be living with to come prepared – mentally, physically, and emotionally. Individual sites will work out meeting schedules with their groups. Expect to meet for approximately two to three hours bi-weekly during the fall and winter semesters for a combination of fundraising, educational, and social activities. Community service will be a weekend-long experience that will take place once a month for the entire school year (except December). It is also required to stay overnight were you will be volunteering. You will attend site approximately 7 times throughout the year. All participants will also be required to come to the AW Wide KICK-OFF prior to your first trip.
ALCOHOL & DRUG POLICY
Alcohol and drug use and possession on any UM-AW trip is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN due to University policy, liability and legal issues, respect for the members of your group and – most importantly – the individuals and organizations with whom we are working during spring break. If you are found with alcohol or drugs, you will immediately be asked to leave your group and travel home at your own expense.
COST
Although there is no participant fee, we do require that all participants attend all fundraising events that are arranged by the site leaders. The amount fundraised helps cover site fees, transportation costs, and food expenses. Additionally, each group will be responsible for raising money that will be used as a donation to the site as well as to cover transportation costs and any housing fee.
