University to Host 4th Annual "Careers for Public Good" Event
by Caroline MassadStudents and alumni noted for their public interest work will gather on November 14 for the University's fourth annual Careers for the Public Good event.
The event's sponsors--which include the Ginsberg Center, the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA), The Career Center and eight other U-M programs and schools--invite alumni who have made significant contributions to the progress of social justice since graduation to return to campus to network with students and participate in discussions.
Careers for the Public Good aims to help students explore the wide array of career opportunities in social justice, event organizer and LSA Undergraduate and Graduate Education Program Assistant Brittany Marino said.
"The purpose of this event is to show our graduating students that you don't have to give up on your passion for and commitment to social justice just to make money after college," Marino said.
The day will include eight panels focused on community development and organizing, teaching and working in public schools, advocacy through nonprofit work, global activism, government and policy, social justice entrepreneurship, arts and the media, and working with communities in Detroit. So far, 27 alumni have confirmed their attendance and the organizers hope approximately 150 students will participate.
Careers for the Public Good began during LSA's "Theory and Practice of Citizenship" Theme Year in 2006-2007. It has continued due to its popularity with students and supporting offices, Marino said.
In addition to the Ginsberg Center, the College of LSA and The Career Center, the College of Engineering, the Program on Intergroup Relations, the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, Spectrum Center (formerly the Office of LGBT Affairs), the Ford School of Public Policy, the Office of University Development, the CAAS/Women's Studies Pedagogy of Action Program, and Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates are sponsoring the event.
