Each year, the Rosalie Ginsberg Awards for Service and Social Action recognize members of our University community -and community partners - who have committed themselves to community service and social action.
The celebration of this work, and a ceremony honoring this year’s winners was held on Friday, April 17 in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union.

Outstanding Community Impact
Gwen Braude, for her outstanding work as an America Reads Mentor Tutor and a Project Community Peer Facilitator and her leadership and dedication to inspiring other students to work for social justice.
Nathan Cataline, for his commitment to community development work in Detroit with the Creekside Community Development Corporation, the Neighborhood Project and the Detroit Vacant Property Campaign.
Jacquelyn Coats, for her sustained and deep work with Alternative Spring Break, Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates, American Friends Service Committee Michigan Criminal Justice Program, Volunteers Involved Every Week, and the Strong Moms, Strong Girls Program.
Sherita Gary, for her dedicated work to increase access to higher education for underrepresented students through several programs of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Outstanding Campus Impact
Circle K, for engaging students in over 8300 hours of community service in year-long projects as well as Circle K Service Day, and developing intentional learning opportunities for student volunteers.
Moustafa Moustafa, for founding the interfaith organization Children of Abraham, which shipped over one million dollars in medical supplies to Tanzania and Ghana.
Jaimie Philip, for her sustained commitment to developing opportunities for community service learning and social action in the Michigan Community Scholars Program.
Madeline Stano, for developing a new Project Community section focused on human rights as well as for her larger coalition-building work in other programs across campus.
Outstanding Center Impact
Holly Frei, for her leadership with SERVE’s North American Summer Service Team, America Reads, and the Ginsberg Center Student Advisory Board, and her enthusiasm to act as a steward for the Ginsberg Center and service-learning across campus.
Outstanding University Program
University-Community Social Justice Film and Discussion Series (Michigan Community Scholars Program, Ann Arbor District Library, Michigan Television), for their monthly film series bringing together Michigan students, high school students, and community members for discussions of social justice issues.
Outstanding Community Partner
Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation, for close partnership with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, Urban Planning, Social Work, and AmeriCorps, and for creating opportunities for intentional student learning about community development.
Friends of Detroit / Tri-County, for their outstanding dedication as a partner with the Alternative Weekends and Alternative Spring Break programs and for their commitment to promoting student learning through service.
Outstanding Staff Member
Kelly Kowatch, School of Information, for her dedicated work to greatly expand and strengthen her school’s Alternative Spring Break program.
Outstanding Faculty Member
Michael S. Spencer, School of Social Work, for his exemplary incorporation of social justice dialogue into his courses, his significant and sustained work in Detroit, his dedication to mentoring students, and his work to promote social justice and to increase diversity awareness in the school as a whole.
