UM Service Learning Courses

University of Michigan faculty members teach dozens of service-learning courses that enable University of Michigan students to provide direct service to local schools, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. You can take a service-learning course from almost every department at the University, and independent study credit (2MB PDF) is available if you can find a faculty sponsor for the service and learning opportunity for which you are looking. For the most accurate information, consult the semester course guide.

The undergraduate departments where service-learning courses tend to cluster are:

In addition, there are two large peer-facilitated service-learning courses: Sociology 389, also known as Project Community, and Psychology 211, also known as Project Outreach.

Finally, each semester there is a social justice course fair where different programs can recruit students for the following semesters. Past course fairs included information on courses with Project Community, Program on Intergroup Relations, Women Studies, Urban and Region Planning, the Detroit Initiative, the Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates (GIEU), and the Prison Creative Arts Program. Dates for the course fair change each year, but course fairs take place in November or March. For more information on the social justice course fair, please e-mail pcinfo@umich.edu.
